Perhaps his discovery that he's Aaron's uncle came after their previous 
discussion.

Maybe it wasn't intended for Smokey to kill them. The only people we know
it 
has killed are Eko and the pilot. It has had numerous other op****tunities
to 
kill others but it didn't so it's not some indiscriminating, cold-ashen 
killer.
