Unless Sawyer was supposed to be one of the two Jack mentions who
didn't survive...

Could be Cassidy approached Kate after all the hoopla surrounding the
"rescue."  I'm sure "James Ford" would have been listed among the dead
and Kate may have put two plus two together on her own if she and
Cassidy talked a bit more about Clementine after the rescue...
