We don't know whether he actually had a psychic vision or not. Even
if he made a living as a fake psychic, he may have gone into that line
of work because he had some genuine ability. He may have told Eko
that he was a fraud in order to get him to stop investigating his
daughter's experience, or to spite his wife, whom he called a zealot.
He may even have wanted to sue the coroner for negligence: "He's just
trying to cover up his own negligence. He tell you the whole story,
how she supposedly drowned? She fell into a mountain river. Her body
shut down, she went into hypothermia which made her appear dead."
It appears that Charlotte Malkin *may* have some real psychic
ability. We can't write off that possibility for Richard just because
he wanted Eko to stop his investigation. If Richard has an inkling of
what the island is, he may think it far too dangerous for his family
to get involved in possibly exposing its nature.
