They can't.  Desmond has been traveling into the past and changing it. 
He killed a mouse.  :-)

(If Desmond couldn't change the past, then the audience wouldn't care 
about his time-traveling trips if they can't affect anything.)

Eloise The Time-Traveling Mouse died before she could learn the maze she 
was supposed to have learned in the future.  That's because Faraday 
became preoccupied with Desmond and didn't teach her.
