The point is that the past *was* changed.

Had Desmond died in the past in one of his time-travel trips due to the 
time-travel sickness, the present and future would have been changed 
severely.  We had to believe that was possible, or else the entire 
suspense of the episode would have been ruined.

That's the difference between the past and the future.  For Desmond's 
time travel trips to be dramatic, they have to have the potential to 
alter the past.  (Even if those alterations smooth out in a 
course-correction manner.)  Whereas for the flashforwards to be 
dramatic, we have to believe the future is fixed.

That's the rather arbitrary rule that the producers have imposed.
