Up to now he has *always* chosen a selfish course of action.  Jack has
single-mindedly pursued the goal of being the ackowledged Leader and
Rescuer of the Oceanic 815 surviviors and all-around Alpha Male of
Lostaway Island, no matter what that requires.

Insofar as it requires that at least some of the Oceanic 815 survivors
continue to survive and ultimately be rescued, this isn't entirely a
bad thing.  But if the label you're trying to apply is "unselfish",
then motive matters more than outcome, and I don't think that label
fits Jack.
