But past Desmond did NOT exist separately from present Desmond, as he 
had all of present Desmond's memories, each time he traveled to the 
past.  (He told his sergeant that he remembered flying in a helicopter.)
And vice versa--present Desmond remembered his past travel trips.  So 
they're one and the same Desmond.
