As for Jack getting sick, I strongly suspect the whole thing was a non-
too-subtle plot device to set up the finale - if only six people get
to leave the island, there has to be a method to the madness...

RWG (and Jack isn't the type who would actively choose to leave if
someone else could've taken his spot)
