I think it's all part of alibi building.  For reasons which we'll find
out, Jack had to be tem****arily incapacitated, and yet to appear to
resist it so it wasn't his fault.

A rather glaring example was the restraining order Sawyer put on
Miles, which was necessary for him to let Claire get away with
Christian.  Hey, wasn't his fault.

They all have plausible excuses to account later for their actions.
