Young Locke did seem to choose the vial of sand, which I think is 
correct.  I could make a case for his choosing any or all of the other 
items.

 From what his foster mom said, I think he was just being difficult and 
deliberately chose the knife just to piss Richard off.  He knew the 
knife didn't really belong to him.
