"As a legislative body, the General Court could make proclamations of
law as needed. In the early years of the colony, these laws were not
formally compiled anywhere. In 1636 these laws were first organized
and published in the 1636 Book of Laws. The book was reissued in 1658,
1672, and 1685.
Plymouth holds a special role in American history. Rather than being
entrepreneurs like many of the settlers of Jamestown, the citizens of
Plymouth were fleeing religious persecution and searching for a place
to worship God as they saw fit. The social and legal systems of the
colony were thus closely tied to their religious beliefs."
