Wait a minute, the phenomenon is basically his (current) consciousness
being exchanged with his past consciousness. In Minkowski's case, he
couldn't restore his current consciousness to the present time, and
this caused his death, by the brain short-circuiting described by
Daniel, evidently.

If there is "dying in the past", THAT'S what's involved, not a dying
of his physical self in the past. In fact, I would suspect that if
anyone had tried to kill Desmond in the past, he would have turned out
to be as invulnerable as Michael :-). (So, we might postulate that
cross-time communication somehow makes the particular future
communicated-with a fixed-point, i.e. INEVITABLE, at least with
respect to whatever is communicated.)

The peril to Desmond is that his current consciousness would be
trapped in the past long enough to cause his current death (at which
point, I guess the past Desmond consciousness would be restored to
past Desmond, with little or no knowledge of future-Desmond, and live
his life through Swan Station, etc.).
