It was to simply hype the tension in that scene and to show that Frank
was going to stay on course no matter what. Two things were needed to
cause Desmond to become 'confused' or 'unstuck'. One, being exposed to
a high dose of electromagnetism when the Swan station imploded and two,
either going through the storm or simply leaving the island.
