Because he didn't want to overplay his hand and make an outrageous
demand he knew would never be agreed to (or even knew was possible).
Let's put it this way - what kind of a guy do you really think Jack
Shepherd is? The kind of guy who, if faced with the decision of
putting himself on a raft or, say putting Claire on the raft, is he
the kind of guy who would choose himself?
