Good question: how about when he was helping Ben recuperate? The
tension of the operating room hostage situation was long over by that
point. He was hanging around in the Others' camp throwing a football
around, waiting to go home on a sub, with the weak justification that
this would enable him to go get help. At that point, he could say,
"Ben, repay my favor by letting me return to the camp and let Kate go
home", knowing she could go get help just the same as he could. Or
Claire, or Hurley, or Rose and Bernard. Any of the other survivors in
camp can go back to the mainland and call 911; he is a doctor and
could be much more help to the survivors on the beach while waiting
for rescue to come. But he was perfectly fine with bailing.
I think you're giving him way too much credit; the "fix everything"
obsession is being framed in such a way as to ****tray that it has more
to do with his own flaws and insecurities as a person than it has to
do with actual regard for the welfare of others. When push comes to
shove he is completely self-absorbed.
