Just to underscore your point, Desmond sailed away from the Island on
the wrong bearing the first time, when he tried to escape using the
sailboat, and he didn't start traveling in time.  He just sailed in a
circle.

It's the "storm" (whatever it is) plus heavy doses of radiation that
are causing the flashes.
