That's just it, if Frank wants to get back to the freighter and not fly
around in circles, he better stay on that course.  Remember Desmond when
he tried to sail away from the island he sailed due west toward Fiji. 
That would be a compass heading of 170 degrees.  He wasn't able to leave
the islands area because of that heading.

It appears that to leave the island's area you need to be traveling on a
certain compass heading to get through the island's 'electromagnetic
barrier' that surrounds it.  If you are not heading on that certain
compass course you won't be able to leave the island's area.
