I think you are getting some of the scenes confused.  And yes I do have
recorded copies of every episode of 'Lost'.  I think you're mixing
Faradya's dialogue between two scenes from the episode 'The Constant'.

There is a scene early in the episode where Jack and Juliet ask Daniel
and Charlotte as why it is taking so long for the helicopter to reach
the freighter.  Why they have not heard from Sayid.  Daniel explains to
Jack and Juliet that "Your perception of how long your friends have been
gone... it's not necessarily how long they've actually 'been' gone. 
It'll be fine.  It'll be fine.  As long as Frank flew on the bearing
that I gave him.  If he stayed on it, it... it'll be fine."  Then Jack
askes what if he didn't, Daniel that says "Then there might be side
effects."  Daniel doesn't state exactly what are the side effects.  The
side effects could be they would fly/sail around in circles just like
Desmond did when he tried to leave the island.

In a later scene where Sayid calls Jack about Desmond, Daniel says "But
going to and coming from the island, some people can get a little...
confused."  He doesn't say anything about "if they don't do it just
right."  Also Daniel doesn't ask whether or not the helicopter stayed on
course the whole time during the flight to the freighter.  If Daniel
suspected that a momentary deviation from the flight path would cause
Desmond's condition he should have asked about it.  Had Daniel been told
about Desmond being exposed to the electromagnetic anomaly when the Swan
station imploded he would most likely have said that was part of the
reason for Desmond being 'confused'.  Based on that scene you get the
impression that some people can get 'confused' just by going to or
coming from the island.
