I guess who ever is doing those recaps for the ABC website is getting it
wrong. The dialogue I quoted in my last post was taken directly from
the orginal broadcast recording of the show. That's what I go by.

If, as you say, to safely leave the island you must be on a heading of
305. If you don't you'll become 'confused' or 'unstuck in time'. This
implies that you can travel away from the island in any direction. But
to keep from becoming 'confused' or 'unstuck' you need to be on a
heading of 305. If the 305 heading is the only safe heading to keep
from being 'confused' then any other heading should get you away from
the island.

Then why wasn't Desmond able to sail away from the island. He sailed on
a heading of 270 which would have taken him to Fiji. He should have
made it, but with 'side effects'. He would have been in a 'confused'
state or 'unstuck in time', but he would have made it.

Don't forget Daniel tells Jack "But going to and coming from the island,
some people can get a little... confused." Daniel doesn't say anything
about deviating from the course will cause the person to become
'confused'.

The reason Gault tells Sayid to use the heading 305 is so he actually
get back to the island. Which doesn't make sense since the reverse
heading of 305 is 125.
