Presumably that everyone that had gone to the island after they found it,
or gone carousing off ****p, were affected, ie the folks who tried
committing suicide or bleed to death.

Gault, the captain, told Sayid that the only *safe* way to get to and
from the island was to follow the exact heading. Minkowski and Brandon
did not have permission to leave the ****p and they never made it to
the island; that happened before they knew that only one exact heading
was safe.The implication is still that if you do not follow the
*exact* heading, you risk getting "sick" as Minkowski and Desmond did.
Straying slightly off course did affect Desmond, but not Sayid and
Frank, and with the other helicopter trips to and from the island,
presumably they did not stray off course because Keamy and Frank do
not seem to have the sickness.

I'm not so sure about Faraday--the more interesting question is how he
knows that straying from the exact heading of 305 can cause
"confusion". At the time, the crew didn't know what was wrong with
Minkowski and Brandon. Has Faraday been to the island before? How did
he know which heading was the only safe one for Frank to fly?
