I don't know from 'proper behavior' - I've lived quite a while now on
your world and I've yet to see any 'proper behavior' - but if you really
think that Locke's motivations have not had proper groundwork laid for
them...then you are watching a different show than I am.
>From episode ONE, when a parapelegic (sp?) Locke stood up in the
wreckage of the plane crash and staggered away with that look of shocked
realization on his face, the revelation of Locke's motivations began in
earnest and have continued to be developed in almost every episode where
the character has been shown. Everyone keeps calling Locke a 'Man of
Faith'...I see him as a Man of Certainty ( he knows his back was broken
and he would never walk again barring a miracle - and guess what! ).
Locke KNOWS that the Island saved him, in a way no human agency could,
though he does not know how, and he wants to find out what he can do to
protect this miracle-giving 'entity' from those who would abuse its gifts.
If that's not character development, then I don't understand the concept.
