So the makers of "Lost" thought it would be better to make the ****p
captain sound like an idiot than to make some viewers feel ignorant of
navigation?

That'd work fine if Capt. Gault were faking helming the ****p the way
so many other things in "Lost" are faked, and would serve as a clue to
that effect, but even I don't believe they did some magic trick to
make a freighter seem to be sailing when it's really just a painted
backdrop.  The submarine could well have been inoperable; I could even
buy what some viewers theorized -- that the Oceanic 815 passengers got
onto a simulator rather than a real airplane.  But Kahana really
sailed on the ocean, and I see no reason to believe someone other than
Gault was really in charge and Gault a mere figurehead.

Therefore Gault knows exactly what he's saying when he refers to a
heading of 305.  It's probably not a real heading at all, but encoded
communication.
