I'm a she, and what I think is that the "Lost" writers have infused
the show with clues.  It's part of their geekiness (and I mean that in
the best possible way).  At the end of the road, the answers to the
main mysteries of the show won't come totally out of left field.
These are the kinds of guys who delight in their own cleverness and
puns and references.  They'll enjoy looking back and telling us,
"See?  We were giving you clues all along."

The fact that a wormhole has mouths and a throat makes this particular
bit of dialogue even more likely to be a clue.  The producers had no
idea how long the show would last, so early episodes are likely to be
top-heavy with hints.
