There is a major difference between the bum's unsubstantiated belief
and religious belief, though, and that's in the output of behavior. A
good tree bears good fruit and a bad tree bears bad fruit-- that is
why the bum's claims are so easily dismissed.

It's called faith and reason because there is a reason to have faith.
