I know many people here will disagree with this, but I started to
suspect Ben really was a good guy when he told Michael, "We're the
good guys."

If Widmore was behind the Dharam Initiative, and the Others found out
that his only goal was to exploit and violate the Island, which they
view as a sprirtual, religious place (or even Supreme Being), he would
have (in his mind) justification for wiping out the Dharma people.  If
Widmore sent the freighter to wipe out all the people on the island
(no matter how innocent - like the survivors), then Ben's many of
Ben's actions might be justifiable.
