They've always known what the island is, and Damon Lindelof recently
said that time travel has "been in the DNA of the show since the very
beginning."  They've apparently also had a final scene in mind for a
very long time.

So, within that framework, there's lots of room for on-the-fly
plotlines, many of which they've readily acknowledged.  I think if the
wormhole concept proves correct, it must have been there from the
start, as part of that time travel "DNA."  I also think the multiple
references to rocks, stones, and stars point to an extraterrestrial
origin for the island (or at least the anomaly).

The nature of the island is at the center of the entire story, so
recurring motifs on the show are likely to be clues to that nature.
