That's right--and the Others did take the children, which doesn't seem
like such a bad idea now. They were better off with the protection of
the Others. The Others, as we have learned, have good reason to be
distrustful of anyone who happens to fall out of the sky onto the
island, so it seems clear now why Ben didn't just welcome them all and
invite them to the compound.
