He left them to fend for themselves, just as I'm sure you do to homeless 
people every day.  Even though some of the Others' early actions did seem 
hostile (kidnapping the children and Claire), the explanations given have 
suggested decent intentions. It wasn't until after the Losties crossed the

line (literally) that the Others played dirty.
