What with the absurdity of the hoops the characters have to jump
through (or, in this case, sail through) to get from point A in the
plot to point Z, I can't help but be reminded of those old riddles
that generally start:

There are ten people who are on an island, eight of whom want to go to
a big boat.  They have a little boat that holds six people but can
only make two trips.  On the big boat there are ten people, eight of
whom want to go to the island.  They have a helicopter that holds six
people and can only make two trips. Half the people on the big boat
hate half the people on the island and will kill each other if on the
same vessell...

How many boat people can make it to the island before the boat goes
BOOM and how many island people can make it to the boat before the
island gets moved?
