Hmm, we know Ben survives because he made that comment to Sayid about
leaving the island by boat. And unless the writers screwed up with
the dialogue between Ben and Widmore concerning the death of Alex,
that also implies that someone who witnessed it also survives to tell
Widmore about it.
That would mean Locke, Sawyer, Hurley (he DOES have a big mouth :-)
or, God forbid, Keamy or one of his goons, told him the details...
