The island might let him die now, but going back aboard the freighter
wasn't what the island wanted him to do--because he was on board the
freighter when Keamy tried to shoot him in the head, and the island
made Keamy's gun misfire.

I think it's pretty clear that Michael can't die until he does
something to redeem himself--presumably he is going to save the lives
of some of the Losties to make up for taking the lives of two of them.
At least up until the point that Keamy tried to kill him, Michael
hadn't redeemed himself yet because the island wouldn't let him be
killed then.
