The blather on and about Paris Hilton is a creation, not by herself,
but by our celebrity obcessed society. In saying this I'm not letting
her off the hook(she did drive DUI and with a suspended licence) but
to provide a context and a background to judge the "Tempist In A
Teapot."
Now to begin with,it is of course obvious, that she isn't the only
person in America to be charged with DUI and fact she isn't even the
only entertainer to be charged thusly.Nick Nolte, and Robert Downey Jr.
come to mind. After serving time in the pokey she was mocked for being
shallow. Let's deconstrcut this:
1. She wasn't raped or beaten up but the expearence still sucked. She
wasn't Rosa Parks but we didn't want Rosa Parks. We wanted a
rich,white,female which we could mock!!!
2. There are 300 million Americans: do you think she is the only one
with an empty life???
3. The press she got(and used) was the press she didn't want much less
create.
4. In 1948(correct me if I'm wrong) Robert Mitchem spent 45 days in
the graybar motel for pot. He didn't get(picking a figure from the air
but none-the less a telling one) 10% of the attention Paris did.
5. The Celbebrity (crack-like)fixation) has gone into hyperdrive in
the last ten years. Remember it wasn't that long ago that Zaza Gabor(a
name I will repeat later) spent ten days in jail for slapping a cop.
Shw was and still is not only more talented but(in spite of the cop
slapping a nicer person than Paris.
Did Paris warrrant 1 hour on Larry King? No!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The
shallowness of the jesture was on Larry King's head not Paris. This
was underlined to all but the braindead when it was announced that the
next day's guest would be Colin Powell, former Chief of Staff of the
U.S Military and fomer Secretarty of State.
Yes Paris Hilton is "Famous for being Famous." Before Ms. Hilton there
was Charo and before Charo Charo there was Zaza and befoe Zaza there
was Pegggy Hopkins Joyce, a name that draws a blank but a name that is
imprinted on anyone over the age of 55 or any TCM addict. Go to the
video store and rent or buy a copy of "International House." This
classic comedy, which features W.C. Fields also has the afore mentioned
Peggy Hopkins Joyce, a lovely lady and a B- actress who was famouss
for marrying and divorcing rich men.
This movie shows that not only was she lovely but not above(or below)
selfmockery.
Paris Hilton is a spoiled trust fund twit that is why we love to hate
her and why we pay her more attention Than Leelee Sobieski,Melissa
Joan Hart and Jennifer Beals,3 lovely ladies who are only one project
away from doing an Old Navey nostalgia ad.
Before leaving the subject of the bottle blond with an attitude let me
say that the public Schandenfreud(mispelled?) did little justice to
America or to justice itself. 45 days(23 actually) with only one hour
per day spent outside the cell and with no reading material or
excerzise facilities is what they call in the slammer"SUPERMAX
LOCKDOWN."
This is not the way to treat DUIs.And to feed them nothing but baloney
sandwiches is a regimin that garuntees deficency diseases!. Notice
that there isn't any concern shown for the spiritial needs of the
incarcerated? The Jails of California fall behind the prisons of
California.
The easey(and dishonest) thing would be to pick on the conserivitives.
This would be wrong when you consider the silly blather some Liberals
said about the "Country Club Prisons" which the Watergate convicts
were sent to. A prison without rats and a 95% chance of getting raped
eesm to easy for some Liberals.
I mentioned rape since Al Frankin thinks that that should be part of
what awaits the Enron crowd.
Let's get serious and honest:
It's not about running a "Ramada Inn for Convicts." a phrase that pops
up when convicts are freed from their overcrowed rat infested cells.
It's about us,the tax payers,the citizens,providing a nonbrutal matrix
foor those who after a trial are bound over. They(the criminals) are
responsible for what they did to us. We (the taxpayers) are
responsible for what we do to them once we are in our custody.
I will be hionest, after, various reforms are made,Prison will still be
a daughting place,perhaps that's what it should be,but it,even to
serve as a disinsentive, shouls never be a brutal place. The 8th
amendment,an amendment originaly meant to disallow,Spanish Inqustion
styletortue, can be and has been read to disallow, brutal, inhumane
living conditions, which harm the convicts in a physicial or
phycological sense.
