Hi all, Nearly ten years from my first whirl-wind visit to Oahu, my
second one begins in about 48 hours! Travel writer/photographer Jad
Davenport formulated a "Magnum's Hidden Oahu" story idea which was
commissioned by the Los Angeles Times Magazine and I'll be the sort
of human subject of it - Oahu is the real topic. L.A. Times and the
Oahu Visitors Bureau are covering expenses for us to be on the island
six days. We've known for only a couple weeks that the trip and its
timing are for real and since it's a too-good-to-be-true type of event
for me, I've been keeping it under my VMO2 cap as far as postings on
the various fan sites. Day after tomorrow my wife and I will be in
the air on our way! We'll be visiting, to document and photograph,
all or most of the prominent shooting locations for Magnum, P.I. Many
of them currently are being used for LOST. For now, I don't yet know
when the resulting feature will run in the L.A. Times Magazine.
Here's a blast from the past for you, attached below. Aloha,
- DR

Subject: Hawaii Visit Progress Report
HI Guys!
Sorrty about all the server noice and text problems! I'm
in Honolulu right now ((9:30 am Haawwaii time, 2:30 pm EST)
at the state public library using their public access internet
terminal to telnet to my Detroit Freenet accounhtt to draft
this for you to send to my LA Freenet account from where I
can post it to the newsgroup. Long story short all this
hopping and converting creates problems for the message.
I got into Hono. at 4:30 Wed. and hooked up with my
friend who is putting me up. We went to the hotel where
my conference has been happening so I could register and
we smoozed at the reception.
Got a good nights sleep (needed it after being ip
(oops, 'up') for about 32 hours straight. I had been so
'keyed up" for the trip I couldn't sleep back home! Got
up early yesterday and went to the conference at 8:00.
Attended a few paper presentations until the lunch break
at 11:00. Then I grapbbed camera dand tri-pob and hit
the road. Walked two blocks to Waikiki and turned
Diamond Head (east) and started traveling and shooting
Magnum filming sites. Got great pics of Kapiolani
War Memorail (the water stadium from "Death & Taxes" and
others). Snapped St. Augustine's church from above ja
just as it was filmed in "Infinity & Jelly Doughnuts".
Stopped at the Outrigger Canoe Clunb where Tom's a
member and had a metting with the General Managert -
a rieal nice guy who gabve me lots of info. on Tom's
activities with this very exclusive club. He let me
shoot their walled-in volleyball courts (from
"Adelaide" and tother episodes) and sent me next door
to the Elks Club whichh is the place used as the
"King Kamehameha Club" for approx. the frst season of
MPI. I met the General Managert over there who also
was very nice and very interested in my activities
as a "way gone" (as he put it) Magnum fan. He gave
me "carte blanche" - the run of the club to take all
the shots I waneted of all angles used in MPI
upstairs and downstairs. He was totally cool! Even
wanted to come around with me arrangeing the furniture
as it was in MPI episodes!
Left and hopped over to the Waikiki Shell outdoor
auditorium which is in the center of the Kapiolani
Park. G It was standing open so I just strolled in.
Nobody there so I whent all around inside and tooks
tons of snaps (the shell is in "The Sixth Positions").
By then it was time to haead back to the
Prince Kuhio hotel to get ready for my own paper
presentation on MPI. I had a table on which I spreakd
out lots of different MPI documents - both related
to my academic work with the series and Magnum
Memorabilia fan organization info. There was a TV
news crew there covering the convention and they
filmed my stuff for the evening news! I think it was
Hono's "Fox 2 Neews" but I didn't get a chance to see
the report on TV lastnight. :-( Had a good
turnout for my presentation. Showed my video clips
(I had invited Tom by buy he didn't show. :-( )
In the evening whent out to Pearl City to miit
with and old bfriend who lives in Navy housing.
He's a Lt JG on a Frigate stationed at Pearl. Got
to meet his wife and son for the first time. The
fed me supper. :-) About 10PM left to head back to Hono.
and stopped by the Aloha Towaer which is a popular
night spot these days with several waterfront bars.
Had a beer at the Gordon Birsch microbrewery (one
of the few "non-Magnum " places I had hopped to see).
God (oops, "got") back to my friends house about mid-
night and crashed. This am I have started at the
downtown area on foot at 8:30. So far this am have
stopped for pictures at the State Capitol bldg.,
Iolani Palace, the King Kam statue. Then I
realized I was across the street from the library so
stopped in to see if they had public internet
access. And here I am!
just a block or two from here is Parke
Memorial Cha;pel ("Michelle's church") were I
have arranged with the manager to come in and take
plenty of shots. Also will check out the attached
St. Andrew's Cathedral which is where Thomas h got
"married" in the ep. "I Do?" Also will drop down
to the Falls of Clyde ship by Aloha Tower , as it's
the ship on which Thomas met Buck Greene in
"Memories ARe Forever."
While writing this paragraph I just got a call
from the former head set designedr from MPI who is
soon on his way downtown to pick me up and take me
over to the Diamond Head film studio where all
the permanent interior sets for MPI were filmed
and are stored (the Guest House, the inside of
Higins study, etc.) He wantes to give me the
class-A tour and , under the table, he says he
may sneak some of the props or sets (not much
of it as this is against the rules) out for me
to take back to the archive at Magnum
Memorabilia.
Later today perhaps Waimanalo where is the
"Robin's Nest" estate and the per (sorry, pier)
used as the Island Hoppers home-base. And
maybe Makapu'u Point lookout if I can get in.
(Used at the close of "Infinity").
saturday: Pearl Harbor tour with my Navy
buddy - no helo ride, their choppers are all
in right now for routine mainenance, but he
says if they weren't I would've gotten a
chopper hop around the Island. :-| Oh, well,
I guess I ought to leave *somethiing* for
the next trip. :-) Later maybe up the
Pali Hwy to the lookout. Then it'll be time
to get back on the plane for Detroit. :-(
I gotta go. I'm nearing the end of my
time slot on this computer. Once again,
sorry about the text errors - as I'm sure
there will be many by the time this message
gets to the newsgroup. I'll have a more
detailed report after I get back to Detroit.
Aloha!
