============
Dear EWP Supporters, Colleagues, Artists,

It is with deep sadness that we inform you on the passing of Mako,
founding
artistic director of East West Players, a passionate activist advocating
more
opportunities for Asian Pacific artists, and a consummate artist himself
having
been nominated for both an Academy and Tony Award for his performances on
screen
and stage respectively.

Our hearts go out to his family, wife Shizuko Hoshi, daughters Sala and
Mimosa,
and sister Momo.

We are respecting the family's request for privacy; the family has stated
that
there will be no funeral or memorial services; however, if you would like
to
send words of sympathy, there is a PO Box to which you may send a card.
You may
also send a card through EWP’s address and we will forward it on to the
family
as well.

Mail can be sent to:
The Iwamatsu Family
PO Box 633
Somis, CA 93066

Or you may send cards to EWP c/o the Iwamatsu Family
120 Judge John Aiso Street
Los Angeles, CA 90012

Many of you have asked that a memorial or tribute of some kind be held for
Mako
but in keeping with respecting the family wishes there will not be an
organized
gathering. Instead, perhaps a gathering of friends from East West Players
for
dinner or drinks may be a great idea to talk about Mako and the great
times at
East West Players. EWP is 40 years old and has grown into a huge
collection of
artists (in the thousands) that span generations who live in various
locations
(around the country and the world) and there are many others who
participate on
many different levels (that includes season subscribers, donors, community
organizations and business associates in addition to artists). We can all
pay
tribute to Mako in our own way.

Mako’s last public appearance for East West Players was at our 40th
Anniversary
Visionary Awards Dinner and Silent Auction where he presented the Rae
Creevey
Award to Emily Kuroda and Alberto Isaac. We are so grateful that he could
spend
time with us in celebrating a milestone anniversary.

We are certainly grateful for all that Mako did for Asian American artists
and
Asian American theatre. Our lives may certainly have been different
without a
place called East West Players and without the passion of our Asian
American
artistic pioneers like Mako.

Sincerely,

Tim Dang
Producing Artistic Director
As the nation’s premier Asian American theatre organization, East West
Players
produces outstanding works and educational programs that give voice to the
Asian
Pacific American experience.
