It just goes to show you how American TV prides itself as "growing up".
Supposedly they do things like this in many shows, not just MITM, to "stay
relevant" or "progress forward to keep interest". Shenanigans like this
are
the method, yet ironic they call this "maturing".

Agreed 100%.

And I have to confess it works. I tune in watching, thinking, "How are
they
NOT going to make this as bad as they made it seem?".

Maybe - after all I can't see how Malcolm (let alone anyone else) could
stand being with Lois - especially working FOR her - longer than
absolutely
necessary.
Here are the scenarios I envisioned:
Lois forces Malcolm to because "the family needs the money" so she forces
him to then takes all of his paycheck, but still treats him like a child.
(Sidebars could be used on why Reese doesn't get to, dialogue could
include
tiebacks to the fast food fiasco and Reese's work ethic or lack thereof.)
Lois forces Malcolm same as above, they get in a huge scrap throwing
freight, and one or the other gets fired. Lois trumps Malcolm on
seniority
so Malcolm does, then brags to the camera on how he got out of it.
Malcolm asks for the job for spending/car money and Lois gives in, selling
her soul by calling in a favor to manager Craig, who we all know is always
eager to please - for a price. That alone makes Lois furious enough to
snatch all/most of Malcolm's paychecks. So Malcolm starts his unloading
job
but the "price" is that Craig ends up having Malcolm do his personal
errands
on company time. Big Bad District Manager gets wind of it, threatens to
sack Lois, Craig, and Malcolm, till Malcolm "confesses" to get out of the
job.
Did I run with this too much? ;)
