That's probably why I never noticed it after that. I do remember that now
you point it out, but Gus should really have came into it somewhere.
Malcolm and co are Krelboynes after all, so bullies shouldn't exactly
be far away.
Plus, if Gus had Reese in a headlock, then surely that means Gus isn't
scared of Reese, unlike all the other potential bullies in Malcolm's
school. Consequently, Malcolm doesn't have the security of having a tough
elder brother to watch over him?

Yeah, I like the way they do that. It's nice to shows acknowledging their
history and bringing back things from previous episodes. It kind of shows
the characters have moved on and are evolving all the time like we do in
Real Life. But yeah, some of the glaringly obvious ones like the hidden
toilet found in season one mentioned previously on this newsgroup are
just too significant to not mention ever again. Bad mistake on their
part!
