I don't think it has so much to do with money as it does just "looking the
part". At my school I knew kids that were preppy and their families
didn't
have two nickels to rub together. It usually does take money to lead that
kind if lifestyle, but not always. Basically your preps are all about
appearances - trying to look more sophisticated and intelligent than they
might actually be underneath. I knew some preps that partied hearty their
freshmen year of college and flunked out.

Actually, it could be said that the goths are the "anti-posers" in a
sense.
Posers try to be everything they see the mass populus liking and approving
of in constant search of being accepted or noticed. Goths will usually
work
overtime at eschewing and detaching themselves that even whiffs of
popularity or normal acceptance, and will tell you flat out that they
don't
care about being accepted and sometimes even fear it.

Plus, being a jock would mean Reese would have to have teamwork skills,
attend grueling practices regularly, keep his grades up, and at least make
a
bold attempt to be a civil human being for the sake of show.
Of course the groups can intertwine. Some jocks can be preppies. Some
geeks can be goths. Then you have the occasional "skater" that could be a
wild card and fit into any of the above...

Good old Small Town USA, where jockdom ruled and it was noble to be a
ne'er-do-well. :( (I was a geek/Krelboyne, can't you tell? :) )
