They did, once; I think it was right after they first got NFL rights
(which was the 1994-95 TV season). However, the TV "problem" didn't
really get bad until Fox (and, to a lesser extent, CBS) had the late
games on doubleheader days moved from 4:00 Eastern to 4:15 so they
wouldn't overlap so much with the 1:00 games. By that time, Fox had
what it considered to be an "expendable" show: "Futurama".
Remember, only a handful of stations in the Eastern and Central time
zones get a 4:05 Eastern game on Fox when it is not a Fox doubleheader
day.
(Speaking of which, I wonder if Futurama might sneak into one of those
"Animation Encore" airings. I have a feeling it will be King Of The
Hill repeats from the 2004-05 season (except during November, when The
Simpsons will air), as a lot of Simpsons episodes from this season
will have already aired three times because of the two episodes per
night airings, switching to 2005-06 repeats (and showing more Simpsons
episodes) sometime around January.)
I wouldn't be a bit surprised if one of the things that led to the
decision to air reruns on Sundays at 7 was the fact that on the first
two weeks of November that are not Fox doubleheader days (November 6
and 13), while most of the country's Fox stations would be getting
only a 1:00 PM Eastern game (so the 7:00 show would air in full),
Fox's New York affiliate, WNYW, would be showing 4:05 PM games (NY
Giants at San Francisco on 11/6; NY Jets at Carolina on 11/13) on
those dates, so whatever Fox airs on those dates at 7:00 will be shown
"in progress" in the New York City area.
