The DVD was adapted for the small screen.  In fact, on the extras of the
US
DVD it is visually explained why they couldn't do a matter of fact
widescreen.  They shoe segments where, if the full widescreen had been
shown, light stands and other productionary things shoved off to the side
would have been visible.

As to why there isn't a lot of widescreen in the US - most widescreen TV's
sold here are the higher priced plasma or HDTV models.
