Interesting you say that. I actually thought the hairdo he had last year
in
Season 3 - the one that resembled Mark McGrath of Sugar Ray - made him
look
a touch older than this year's style.

I think he is meant more to be in the 11-12 range. In the above
referenced
episode, you will note that Lois is telling him he will be home at 3:00
for
the first time this year, indicated he is starting middle school when
(here)
the school day is an hour longer. In the US, that starts with 6th grade,
which most kids enter when they are 11.
And Dewey is very underused indeed. Granted that is what makes his
outbursts of cute comedy or youngest-child frustration more memorable, but
those are fewer and further between. Although hints that have been
dropped
here in the press might indicate that as Frankie and Justin age, many of
the
"kid" plots the writers have squirreled away may be reserved for Dewey.
Of course, they would be walking a fine line there about making "Malcolm
in
the Middle" into "Dewey in the Doldrums". :)

The dynamic of the show would surely change. For one thing Dewey would be
a
teen, an age that really seems not to be Lois's favorite. Couple that
with
the new baby ousting Dewey from his youngest child post, and the rules can
change. Of course this can be a good thing - the show has most always
been
fresh with ideas and it prevents recycling of ideas.

I guess once they come of age (he was about 19 when the pilot was
commissioned), the looks can plateau and even out.
