So is this site simply an exercise in been there, done that?
The first "counterculture fad" in my mind was Sherlock Holmes. Now, those
dudes knew how to obsess. Check out the history of the various Sherlock
Holmes societies in England and in the United States all the way to the
current day. A true monument to we-will-not-let-it-die-ism.
So MST is off the air for a couple of years and everyone's moved on?
Pussies.
I found out, more or less by chance, that haikeeba.com was available. I
couldn't believe it. I snapped it up. I am a true hardcore Mystie, at
least
through the first half of Season 5, though I've never participated in MST
discussions online, so wih domains on sale at $1.99 I finally had an
excuse
to run an MST3k site.
You see, it didn't really matter to me that the show was off the air. To
me,
it had been off the air since Mitchell.
(I say that in a deliberately provocative tone to incite discussion. Let's
get an argument going!) Not that I reject Mike's episodes entirely; I
quite
like Danger Death Ray and Prine of Space. Just spare me Mary Jo, please. I
just can't go there.
You think you're a hardcore MSTIE? I have tapes that I recorded off the
"air" myself for ALL of the Joel episodes. Original recordings. Through
the
long nights after my divorce, at 1 in the morning, off Comedy Central, in
the lonely confines of a tiny apartment.
{Things have gotten a lot better since then - don't cry.}
I also have VCD's of almost averything available from the Digital Archive
Project. Most nights, after we've called it a night, me and my wife take
turns deciding which MST to watch to fall asleep to.
You think YOU"RE a MSTIE? I've got a WIFE who knows every episode. Drool
with envy.
So the kids are gone, moved on to whatever the new hot show on the SciFi
channel is. So the arguments about Joel vs Mike are years and years over
with. There are still brand new fans out there; there are still things we
haven't spread to the world about this show.
There is still a community of people interested in this show, dammit.
It doesn't really matter to me - HAIKEEBA.com is a cool domain name anway
and I'll find SOMETHING to do with it if no one participates. I just bet
there's still enough fans out there to make a forum worthwhile.
And then we'll drag you back to the Pundits Themselves - the Firesign
Theatre. And then you'll be truly lost in geekery.
