To the Apparent Void,
I must admit to being out of the "Newsgroup" scene for quite some time.
Furthermore, I realize that Sliders effectually self-destructed nearly 6
years back and hasn't been heard from much since (save a few DVD
releases).
However, it is interesting to me that in this gigantic world full of nerds
and such, that the fan-base ... or atleast the ACTIVE fan-base, seems to
have all but disappeared. Shows like 'Star Trek' (the original) and
'Battlestar Galactica' (again, the original) were able to maintain a
cohesive and steady group of fans for decades after cancellation. Add to
which, neither show had near as many produced episodes as "Sliders" (the
former ending after 3 seasons and the latter ending after only just 1).
None of this is my intenet to point fingers or create some kind of "save
sliders" movement. Rather, it's just a short rant of regret on my part
that
a show that meant so much to my child-hood should be forced to face it's
last days. I suppose such is the way of things, but I do have many fond
(albeit 'nerdy') memories of logging onto the Sliders newsgroup each
evening
after a new episode and reading the thoughts/comments/rants/criticisms/etc
written by my fellow TV-Land Colleagues. Though, I suppose lacking new
material to work with, keeping such an active messaging life would be
difficult. Still, there must be SOMETHING to talk about. After all, as
of
two years back there was still a higly active website community (including
"Tim Lucas' Sliders Page" ... by far the best and most complete), yet most
of that seems to have since died. I guess my main question then is: Why?
What did this show lack in it's fan-base that so many others seemed to
have?
Anyways, I don't expect any kind of response or otherwise ... just
something
for possible like-minded people to consider. Hope this should find anyone
who happens to read in good health and happiness. And, for those of you
who
still subscribe to this group: as depressing as it may be to log on here
and
find no new postings ... don't give up hope. Cheers and salutations
-Neil
