If the artifact was a band that moved up and down the screen
vertically, then it would very likely a ground effect loop. A ripple
moving horizontally could be something related to the DLP
implementation, but I have not kept up on DLP TVs.

Still, you should verify that it is not a ground loop issue. Ground
loop results when one of the A/V devices, STB, TV, or input line is not
grounded to same reference ground as the rest. Poorly grounded or
ungrounded cable TV co-axial lines appear to be the most common cause of
ground loop from posts on avsforum. If you have cable TV, physically
disconnect the cable line to the cable STB/DVR or TV and see if the
ripple is still there on DVR playback sources. Other steps to confirm
ground loop is to disconnect 1 A/V box at a time to see if the possible
ground loop goes away. Or make sure that all the devices - TV, STB/DVR,
sound receiver, DVD player - are all plugged in to the same power strip
or surge protector.
