  Every responsible source states that an effective surge protector
must divert (shunt, connect, clamp, shunt) surges to earth.  Earth is
where surge energy is dissipated harmlessly.  A protector that does
not have a short earthing wire is somehow a complete protection
system?  Then its numeric specs will list each type of surge and
protection from that surge.

  Responsible manufacturers such as GE, Siemens, Square D, Cutler-
Hammer, Intermatic, Keison, and Leviton make a 'whole house' protector
for that TV and for everything else in the house.  What also protects
your dishwasher?  These effective protectors have a wire that can make
that 'less than 10 foot' connection to earth ground.  Effective
protectors earth before the surge can enter a building.  All incoming
wires (telephone, cable) also must connect to that same earth ground.

  Cable companies are now reinstalling cable to make that earthing
connection. Telephone has always had a 'whole house' protector that
must connect to an earth ground required since 1990 by the National
Electrical Code.  But you must install the AC 'whole house' protector
so that destructive surges do not seek earth ground destructively via
the TV.

  Take a $3 power strip.  Add some ten cent parts.  Sell it for $25 or
$150 as a power strip protector.  Providing protection is not the
objective when profit margins are that obscenely high. Where ever
effective protection is installed, the protector makes a short
connection to earth ground.  You must do same for TV protection.

  Meanwhile, the TV store will preach a $100 or $150 protector.  Where
does their protector make that 'less than 10 foot' earthing
connection?  Spend maybe $1 per protected appliance for a 'whole
house' protector from responsible companies.  Names such as Monster
Cable, APC, Tripplite, and Belkin are not sources of effective
protectors.  A $3 power strip with some ten cent components selling
for how much?

  It says it is a surge protector.  Does that mean it provides surge
protection?  Less responsible companies will hope you make that
assumption - use word association to assume a protector and protection
are same.  Surge protection is earth ground.  An effective surge
protector connects (diverts, clamps, shunts) a surge to earth ground.
Ineffective protectors will avoid discussing everything in this
paragraph.
