OK, a simple question. How do you protect a device that is only
equipped with a 2 wire power cord? Are we to open the TV and re-
engineer the power system?

My personal belief is a gadget like a Metal Oxide Varistor  ( MOV ) to
clamp over-voltage peaks will cover the bulk of problems. It would be
better yet to remove high frequency transients that may happen near
the zero cross of the voltage even though the transient might not
exceed the MOV voltage. As for a direct lightning hit, you're on your
own there but they are not common at all.

I worked at a TV station many years back that had many lightning hits
but it had that nice 1100 foot lightning rod out back. The vast
majority of the hits did nothing at all but sometimes would take out
the input transistors of an equalizing DA sending satellite receive
video back to the studio - so I believe on the grounding for broadcast
operations.

As for my own stuff, the TV is plugged into the surge protected
outlets of the UPS for the TV computer but the TV itself is not on UPS
only the computer gets that. I'd rather have the show recorded as I
can pause and back up the show - but only if it keeps running.
