  First, two types of devices exist: shunt mode and series mode.
Shunt mode devices connect as if another device on AC mains.  Shunt
mode devices work by shunting, shorting, connecting, clamping, or
diverting.  Series mode devices work by blocking.

 Second, three miles of sky could not stop lightning.  Series mode
devices will not stop surges.  A dam also will not stop a flood.  But
a dike can further divert if that flood has some other path downriver
- the shunt mode path.  IOW Brickwall can enhance protection.  But
first surges must have a downriver path.  No downriver path means
dikes are breached.  Brickwall can enhance protection that first must
be provided by a 'whole house' protection system.

  Brickwall is basically a filter. It will significantly reduce
transients and noise.  It is especially useful when audio equipment
also needs additional noise filtering.  But a safety ground wire
completely byp***** the filter; connects direct to appliance.  Will a
surge use that third wire to bypass Brickwall?  Maybe if a building
earthing system is not properly installed.

  Third, why is Brickwall so large and heavy?  It must do more than
what is already inside a power supply.  Power supplies already provide
significant filtering to make noise and transients irrelevant.
Previously noted, that appliances already have internal protection.
To improve on this 'filtering', a series mode device (ie Brickwall)
must be substantial. Suggested is smaller or lighter 'line
conditioners' will accomplish little if the appliance power supply is
properly designed. One of the many power supply functions is to filter
or convert transients and noise to pure DC current.  Power supply must
be so effective as a 'filter' as to make noise and transients
irrelevant.

  A power supply also has a (safety ground) wire that (as in the
Brickwall) can bypass the power supply.  Best is to first keep
transients out of the building so that safety ground also is 'clean'.
Brickwall is a supplementary solution often used in locations such as
sound studios where less AC line noise is desireable.
