In the illustration in the IEEE guide (starting pdf page 40) the guide 
says "So the vast majority of the incoming lightning surge current flows 
through" the cable entry block `ground' wire. And the guide says that is 
"as the NEC/CEC writers intended."

Poor w_’s religious blinders prevent him from understanding anything 
that conflicts with his religious belief in earthing.

François Martzloff was the NIST guru on surges and wrote the NIST guide. 
He also has many published technical papers. One of them looked at the 
energy that gets dissipated in a MOV on a branch circuit.
- When the voltage from a service ‘hot’ wire to panel ground reaches 
about 6,000V [US] there is arc-over in the panel. Once established, the 
voltage across the arc is hundreds of volts. That dumps most of the 
surge energy to earth.
- The impedance of a branch circuit greatly limits the current, and thus 
energy, that can reach a plug-in suppressor. The energy dissipated at 
the MOV in Martzloff’s experiments was surprisingly small - worst case 
35 Joules. And in 13 of 15 cases it was 1.1 Joule or less. The surge 
applied to the source (where arc-over could occur) was up to 10,000A - 
an extremely large surge at a service panel.

suppressors are effective.


For accurate information on surge protection read the excellent IEEE and 
NIST guides. Both say plug-in suppressors are effective.

w_ still has *no* link to another lunatic that says plug-in suppressors 
are NOT effective. But that does not deter a religious fanatic.

w_ has still never answered simple questions:
- Why do the only 2 examples of protection in the IEEE guide use plug-in 
suppressors?
- Why does the NIST guide says plug-in suppressors are "the easiest 
solution"?
- How would a service panel suppressor provide any protection in the 
IEEE example, pdf page 42?
- Why does the IEEE guide say "the only effective way of protecting the 
equipment is to use a multi****t protector."
- Where is the link to a 30,000A and 590Joule rated MOV for $0.10.
- Why does the IEEE Emerald book include plug-in suppressors as an 
effective surge protection device?
