  You may get it.  But after ineffective is defined, why is an
overpriced Tripplite cited as a 'quality' protector?  That's the
point, isn't it.  This idea that a plug-in protector is also
protection is so embedded in conventional wisdom that the Tripplite is
'exampled' as a quality product.  The Tripplite does not even claim to
provide that protection.  Where damage cannot happen, those facilities
install 'whole house' type protectors and better earth ground.  High
reliability facilities don't use plug-in protectors.  Effective
protector earths surges without anyone knowing a surge even existed;
with the protector remaining undamaged.

  Because MOVs have exploded or plug-in protector "sacrificed itself
to save my computer" means that is good or means protection even
existed?  Of course not.    Spending money on plug-in protectors is
foolish.  Spending that same money on one 'whole house' protector AND
upgrading building earthing provides protection for an HDTV and for
everything else inside the building.

  Some will 'feel' everything can be unplugged before a storm arrives.
Clearly they are home and awake 24 hours every day?  What protects
something most necessary during the storm - smoke detectors?  What
protects the dishwasher?  What protects kitchen and bathroom GFCIs?
Clock radios? Dimmer and timer switches?  Microwave oven? Unplugging
for protection is both futile and unnecessary.  Does your telco unplug
their CO computer - discontinue phone service - during T-storms?  Of
course not.  Instead, the telco installs and better earths 'whole
house' protectors.  Protector is defined by earthing.

Where is the plug-in protector?  No discussed.  The article is about
providing protection.  The most im****tant component where ever
protection is required - earth ground - is discussed extensively.
Why?  Protectors don't provide protection.  Protectors only connect
surges to protection - earth ground.  The effective protector is only
as effective as its earth ground.

  Other professionals make that same point.  IEEE makes
recommendations in Standards.  From IEEE Red Book (Standard 141):

Orange County Florida suffered surge damage to critical emergency
response facilities.  Orange County eliminated surge damage by not

  Where effective solutions are installed, earthing - not a plug-in
protector - is the solution.  A protector is only as effective as its
earth ground. Believe me - or believe professionals who are not
selling a scam.  OP asked about HDTV protection. Select your choice.
