Lightning Transients" - discuss protection in terms of earth ground
and define why plug-in protectors don't have earthing.

  Bud says a protector without earthing provides protection.  It
'clamps to nothing'.  Responsible sources say where surges must be
connected so that surge energy is dissipated harmlessly:  earth
ground.   Bud says a plug-in protector will magically make that energy
dissappear - earthing is not necessary.  Bud claims a protector
'clamped to nothing' will make surge energy disappear.  Effective
protection is when surges connect on a short and non-destructive path
to earth - directly contradicts what Bud posts.

   A protector is not protection.  A protector is the device that
connects *to* protection - earth ground.  Earth ground is where surge
energy must be harmlessly dissipated.  No earth ground means no
effective protection.
