i got it hooked up yesterday morning (phew!)
sound-wise, it's a noticeably better unit
than my 18 month old Denon AVR-2307CI
it clearly pulls a bit more current overall
(with the same speaker setup), but a fan still
isn't needed and i've got noticeably more
power (and a bit more of dynamice range). :)
also, i've got more flexibility with matching
my subwoofer volume level to my other 5 speakers,
regardless of whether my input is from my OPPO
DVD player via EXT.IN (best for DVD movies and CDs
(regular, as well as those with HDCD encoding;
none of my other CD players recognizes HDCD
(see wiki))), or A35 via HDMI cable
plus it (A35) decodes Dolby TrueHD (that my/your
A35 can send out undecoded), which gives a really
superior sound result (via HDMI cable); also
true for decoding DD+ 5.1 (i.e. The Last Samurai);
the only two that i've tried HD-DVD movies
with (so far); i'm looking forward to the
likelihood of DTS and DTS-HD also sounding
much better (from a HD-DVD disc) when i have
the 3808CI doing the decoding
it gives a whole new perspective on HD-DVD
movies that have DD+ 5.1 sound (which afaik
is nearly all of them)
i've also compared sending the sound converted
(in the A35) via HDMI cable,but as multichannel
PCM (one unneeded Digital-to-digital conversion),
and also with the A35 doing the conversion to
analog (and sending via the 6 RCA cables (5.1));
the conversion to analog was by far the bigger
disappointment, and i plan to disconnect the
6 RCA cables and only run sound via the HDMI cable
from the A35 player
since you frequent the audio n/g's, worth noting is the
thread: Re: Home Theater Advice - Receivers and Speakers
in rec.audio.high-end where bob posted on 12-15-'07:
<"And then buy the best Denon receiver you can afford
with what's left.">
imo, just how necessary HDMI 1.2/1.3 are to you
remains to be seen
